RSS (Really Simple Syndication) has many excellent uses in Education. Users and receivers of feeds can collect information without the trouble of doing a mass search. As a broadcasting method it is quite useful too. Teachers and students both can post information via a blog and become apprised of information as quickly as it is written and published to keep informed on a regular basis.

What is RSS

RSS is a very simple tool to use that can save an educator hours when trying to collect information. Simply put, and RSS brings new information from your favorite wesites to you. Once you sign up for an RSS feed from a website, you will be able to see any new material posted to that site without having to go and check the site. If you are currently watching 15 different blogs from teachers or researchers in your field, you can subscribe to their feeds and have all their newest material brought right to you when it is posted. You will need an aggregator to collect all of your feeds.

RSS Feed Aggregators

RSS Feed Aggregators allow users to subscribe to RSS Feeds from websites and collect all new material in one easy location. Aggregators are more powerful than traditional Bookmarks. Web Based aggregators store your feeds online allowing users to access their feeds from any computer. Mobile Device aggregators allow users to view their feeds from their handheld devices like Smartphones or Blackberry. Desktop aggregators store feeds on the computers hardrive allowing for information to be retrieved without an internet connection.

Folders can be created in an aggregator to group feeds according to an individual user's needs. This allows users to organize their incoming information in a way that most suits their particular needs. For example, if you are monitoring feeds from your favorite science blogger, your favorite news channel and your student's blog posts, you can create a folder for each. Checking the appropriate folder allows you to only focus on the information that is pertinent to you at the time.

Aggregators can be set to monitor the web for specific key words. This feature allows teachers to be informed when any new information is posted to the web on topics they have chosen to monitor.
